The Wisdom of Life’s Seasons: Embracing Change and Preparation

While meditating early in the morning, I had a thought on the cycle of life. The idea stemmed from pondering the woman’s menstrual cycle. She experiences periods of flow, including heavier, lighter, and non-flowing days and this cycle repeats itself every month.

This was a lesson from the Holy Spirit about life. It is that life is a cycle, and it’s okay to have highs and lows in different areas of our lives (money, health, relationships, etc.). Understanding that life is in cycles makes life a lot easier to live. Like how the monthly cycle is accepted as normal, we also need to accept that life includes highs and lows. The cycles of life take different forms, but they come. Scripture tells us that there is nothing new under the sun. What we have today existed in a different form in the past.

What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun. 10 Is there anything of which one can say, “Look! This is something new”?  It was here already, long ago; it was here before our time.

Ecclesiastes 1:9-10

When you believe that life occurs in cycles, you embrace it as a natural process and prepare for the different phases. During the high, you make the most of it since you know that there will be a low point as well. In the low point, you are encouraged that this is just a temporary state and that you will eventually reach the high point. If you are now experiencing a high, please make the most of it; if you are experiencing a low, be reassured that it is only a phase that will pass.

There are seasons in life, be prepared for all seasons of your life. The low season is not the time to be sad but to prepare because you know that there is a high season approaching. If you don’t do what you need to do in that low season, when the high season comes, you are unlikely to maximize it well because you have not spent time to prepare adequately.

Depending on how you handled the prior seasons, a new season may arrive in a different form. The form for the next season may be better depending on how you handle each season. For instance, while your pay has increased from $10 per day to $100 per day, you still aim to make $1000 per day. Although today’s salary is larger than yesterday’s, it has now become our new low in comparison to tomorrow. You’re most likely experiencing the fulfilment of your prayers, but eventually, where you are now will become a low in comparison to tomorrow. If you maximize your seasons, though the cycle continues, it’s in a different form. Same thing with our prayer life, you start with praying 15 mins a day to praying 30 mins and then to hours. Currently our highs are other people’s lows. Aspiring for better is normal, there are limitless possibilities in God to aspire towards.

But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.

Proverbs 4:18

An Example of life’s cycles found in Ecclesiastes 1:5– The sun rises, sets, and quickly returns to its original position. It’s not a negative thing when the sun sets; that’s when the moon rises, and the season is meant for you to sleep so your body can recover and replenish itself for the following day. This helps you understand that there is a good purpose for what we consider the lows, the important thing is to understand it and align to the purpose. The lows are always made to prepare for the high.

The sunset is so you rest and be prepared for the activity of the sun rise. Let’s imagine that you are waiting for unfulfilled promises, be encouraged by the words God has given you and use the time to prepare for the places God said you will go to. For example, you are meant to be a public speaker, what are you doing now to become a better public speaker? You are meant to be a kingdom financier, what do you know about finances? You are meant to be married, what do you know about marriage and your responsibility as a partner? I could go on and on with examples but the important thing to note is that the low season is a season of preparation for the high season.

Always prepare with the mind that your time will come and what you don’t want to happen is for opportunity to come when you are not prepared for it.

I returned and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favor to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.

Ecclesiastes 9:11

Looking at the story of Joseph and Pharaoh with the 7 years of abundance and 7 years of famine. Others weren’t conscious of this cycle of life, they didn’t maximize the season of abundance, but Joseph did and when the low came it was bad for others, but it created a room for a greater high for Joseph and Pharoah. Pharaoh during this low season was able to acquire all the lands in Egypt and even began a tax system where the people paid him for using the lands.

How do we apply this to life? When you experience financial buoyancy, remember to save more and invest more because there might be times when the cash doesn’t flow as it used to. These savings might come in handy when you are in your low or come handy when a life changing opportunity comes along. When you are in the honeymoon phase of your relationship, hold onto those memories and the words God has given you so that when things are tough those memories and words will help you overcome those challenges.

This understanding might be new for some and known to others. However, it is a reminder not to beat yourself up too much but to make sure you are adequately maximizing the season you are in. What we call low might not be low depending on our perception of the season. We can see it as a low point or as an opportunity to develop and prepare for the high points of our lives.

You may have read this and haven’t accepted Jesus into your heart or feel like you’ve lost your way in the busyness of life.  I would like you to say this short prayer: “Lord Jesus, I acknowledge you as my Lord and personal saviour. I repent of my sinful ways. I accept your gift of salvation. I ask that you come into my heart and make it Your dwelling place.  Lord Jesus, teach me your ways so that I may know you intimately”.
