What are you Hearing?

The phrase “To believe good things is to say good things” appeared to be whispered into my ears sometime between falling asleep and waking up. I questioned what the Lord was trying to express to me: Should what I say condition what I believe in my heart, or should my words reflect what I believe in my heart? I believe it’s both.

17 So faith comes from hearing [what is told], and what is heard comes by the [preaching of the] message concerning Christ.

Romans 10:17

This sentence is best described in Romans 10:17. Faith is acquired through hearing what is told, and if something is not spoken, how can we hear it?  This indicates that to grow your faith, you must hear a word about the thing you’re attempting to believe in, and the word must be spoken to be heard.

In relation to the saying “to believe good things is to say good things”; to believe good things or anything else, those things must first be heard, and for that thing to be heard, it must be spoken. As you listen, your brain educates your subconscious to accept what you are hearing. The words spoken do not have to be from someone else; you can even speak to yourself, in the form of declarations and what you meditate on.

It is important to state what you want to see happen in your life. The bible says that our tongue has the power to give us life or death. This is because whatever you say conditions your environment, regardless of who you are speaking over. This is why it is important not to speak negatively about someone because you may think you are just talking about them, but you are also conditioning a negative environment for yourself.

21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue,
And those who love it and indulge it will eat its fruit and bear the consequences of their words.

Proverbs 18:21

Now, through speaking, you condition your heart’s beliefs, which eventually yield fruit. According to the Bible, a person becomes what he believes in his heart. When you proclaim what you want to believe, you believe it, and you begin to become what you believe.

This is how negative and positive patterns form. The negative pattern can be broken by the positive one. It all starts with hearing a word, then believing that word, then witnessing the manifestation of that word, and the manifestation establishing a new belief system, causing one to speak from that new belief, and the cycle continues.

For instance, a child who has been told repeatedly that they are stupid will begin to believe it. As a result, they will become afraid to take exams because they believe they are not competent. Because of their fear, they end up failing the exams, which only reinforces their belief that they are stupid. To change this, the child needs to start hearing positive remarks about how intelligent and awesome they are. As they start to believe it, this gives them the confidence to take their exam and pass it. This then reinforces their belief that they are intelligent, and the cycle continues.

If there is an area of your life that needs to change, keep in mind that it all begins with listening to the right words, whether they are declarations made by yourself or those said by others. It is what you listen to that strengthens your beliefs, and what you believe is what you will experience in your life, so be careful what you believe about yourself and other people. If you say good things about yourself and others, you will believe good things about yourself and others and you will start to see good things for yourself.

It’s vital to keep in mind that this applies to both good and bad things, so we must be careful with our words and listening. The bible advises us to guard our hearts with all diligence since issues in life come from them. Serial killers began killing in their hearts before they began to commit the crimes.

I remember a day when I had to go into the office and was frustrated about it because of the long commute and the fact that I am already accustomed to working from home. When I got up that morning to go to work, I told myself that I was excited to be going there and that I would love the trip and the entire experience. I then had his smile on my face. This was because the Holy Spirit helped me realise that I oversee how my day turns out. It will be a miserable day if I think it will be, but it will be a joyful day if I decide to set it so.  The reality is that I enjoyed being at work; I wasn’t annoyed, just glad to see my co-workers and work together. In fact, I was more productive than usual that day. This let me realise how much power we do have—we just must use it.

Now what has happened is that by affirming the good things I wished to see, I have reconditioned my beliefs. The words and the smile transmitted a signal of joy to my subconscious. I had this belief, and because I had this belief, it came to pass because a man is what he believes in his heart to be. This approach has assisted in forming new beliefs, which will subsequently influence how I speak. Because I had a pleasant experience at work, I will speak more favourably about it going forward.

You may have read this and haven’t accepted Jesus into your heart or feel like you’ve lost your way in the busyness of life.  I would like you to say this short prayer to begin the cycle of positive occurrences: “Lord Jesus, I acknowledge you as my Lord and personal saviour. I repent of my sinful ways. I ask that you come into my heart and make it Your dwelling place.  Lord Jesus set me free from all lies, bring me into Your truths and fill me with the Joy that comes from Your truth.”.
