How to Excel at All You do (Part 2).

We are still in the beginning of the year, so now is a wonderful moment to put this out there so that you can win this year and not be jealous of others’ success like Cain, but instead rejoice in your own. I strongly advise reading part one of this series if you haven’t already, as it provides a solid grounding on the topic. We will now examine the actions that must be taken to give our best.

1) Change your mindset

As a man thinketh in his heart, so he is. As a result of hearing this so frequently, we are aware that our thoughts and perspectives are the foundation of everything. Therefore, to get to the point where we are giving our all to what we do, we must first make up our minds that whatever we do is an offering to God, and how we approach it reveals the nature of that offering. If we give anything less than our best, we are giving Cain’s gift and will receive Cain’s reward; however, if we give anything more than our best, we are giving Abel’s offering and will receive Abel’s reward. I think we all want to receive Abel’s award, thus we must all strive to provide our best. With this mindset, you will want to give everything you have to whatever God has asked you to do or whatever service you have offered to perform.

7 For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. “Eat and drink!” he says to you, But his heart is not with you.

Proverbs 23:7

2) Set Sustainable Goals

Now that we have the right mindset, the next thing to do is set sustainable goals. Noticed I used the phrase “sustainable goals”? The reason we do not give our best to what we do is because we are doing too many things at the same time. Heard this saying “Jack of all trades, master of none”.

It’s acceptable to set one or two goals, but no more than three at a time. Less is more because having three goals and achieving them is preferable to having ten goals and not achieving anyone. While having lofty goals is good, let’s begin by creating the tiny drops of water that eventually grow into the vast ocean. Setting fewer goals makes it easier to concentrate on one item at a time, and even if you get bored with them, you are committed to finishing them before setting new ones.

I am aware that some of us participate in numerous activities out of FOMO (fear of missing out), but if you want to see real results, you should set realistic targets and devote all of your attention to achieving them. If anything does not match with the present purpose you have been given, be ready to say “NO.”

28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it

Luke 14:28

3) Make the Goals Visible

Write down these goals as something that has already been done, for example “I have finished the sales course”. Put them in a visible location where you can see them every day to serve as a reminder of the goals you are working toward throughout the course of that period, which may be a month, quarter, half-year, or entire year. Make the vision clear, the bible advises. Do you not wonder why God gave that command? It is to establish it; typically, what is written is stamped. Like how a written contract is more significant than an oral one. Writing down your goal and placing it where you can see it helps you focus on what you need to do.

2 And the Lord answered me: “Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it.

Habakkuk 2:2

To give yourself some flexibility, you can put down a yearly goal, divide it into quarterly goals, and then further divide it into monthly targets. To see how far you have come in fulfilling your goals for that quarter and what else needs to be covered, you may translate these monthly goals into weekly activities that you can then review each month.

4) Give yourself time

Give yourself time to complete the task; wait until you have done so completely before moving on to the next thing. I remember planning to read the entire Bible in six months, but the Holy Spirit just advised me that it is better to do one year with a higher chance of finishing than six months with a high chance of losing it along the way.

16 A man’s gift makes room for him, And brings him before great men.

Proverbs 18:16

If you are learning a skill, make sure you are proficient in it so that even when someone asks you about it in the middle of the night, you are prepared to respond. Some people are in too much of a hurry to achieve their reward too soon. The bible says a man’s gift makes room for him, focus on honing the skills, it will make room for you. To avoid making it harder for those doors to open again, take care not to open doors before they are ready. You know those tailors that do “what I ordered vs. what I got?” It’s because they didn’t take the time to understand that dress pattern and thus couldn’t manufacture it. You wouldn’t visit that tailor ever again, I’m certain of it. They undoubtedly closed that door, then. If you are that tailor do not feel bad, there is still hope. Staying power is crucial. I realise that it is getting harder and harder in our day, but with God’s help, we will persevere until we achieve mastery. This brings up the subject of faithfulness, but we’ll talk more about that in a later post.

5) Get an Accountability Partner

Find a partner for accountability; this person could be a mentor, a friend, or a relative. Just someone to keep you in check in case you start straying too far from your original goal. There was a reason you set those first objectives; they were significant enough that you couldn’t get tired of them after just a few days of working toward them. You require someone to refocus you. They could schedule regular check-ins with you to assess your progress; these could be weekly, bimonthly, or monthly, but they shouldn’t last longer than a month. You must get the review at least once every month to remain on track.

11 Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.

1 Thessalonians 5:11

I distinctly recall saying to my mother and closest friend that I wanted to concentrate on learning more about security and programming, and that if I said anything else, they should slap me. I realise it was a bit extreme, but I felt compelled to say it. I always remind myself to finish this path to a proficient level before adding anything new whenever something else tries to grab my attention. Other things have attempted to grab my attention, but I remember to refocus and return to my objectives.

6) Ask for Help!

Pray to God for assistance, be honest about your weaknesses, and ask for help. His help manifests as wisdom, opportunities, favour, and so forth. Sincerely, I can’t imagine accomplishing anything without God, thus this is a crucial point. Lord, all of our assistance comes from you; recite this little prayer “Lord I know there are things you have placed in my heart to do but I currently struggle with giving my all or finishing the things I start. Please I ask that You give me Your wisdom and the grace to finish all the things I start. Thank You Abba for answering my prayer”.

1 I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? 2 My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

Psalms 121: 1-2

7) Start Doing

Start pursuing your goals. Yes, you have written out your goals, established your timeframes, found an accountability partner, and prayed to God for guidance. It’s time to get to work right now so that God can bless it. Why are you still here, then? Get to work now.

Thank you for sticking with me all the way to the end. If you’ve tried these steps but aren’t seeing results, the next part of this series will point you to the right direction. Please sign up so you can receive notifications when we post. Please like, comment and share.
